３月に新作「Sound The Alarm」をリリースし、来日公演のPUNKSPRING２０１７でエネルギッシュなライブを披露したLESS THAN JAKE。日本ツアーの模様をドラムのVINNIEに振り返ってもらいました!

日本でのライブを終え、ゲインズビルに２６時間かけて地球を半周して帰ってきた。やっと普通の状態になってきたけど、まだライブの興奮が冷めやらない。狂ったような時間をかけて移動することも日本でライブができるのなら、たいした問題ではない。しかも”あの”PUNKSPRINGの最終回でプレイできた事は名誉なことだ。

簡単にいうと、ライブが出来ること自体とっても嬉しいことなんだけど、好きなバンドや好きな人達とライブができる事は嬉しさの次元が違う。NOFX, BAD RELIGION, MXPX, SNUFF、そしてZEBRAHEAD、みんな素晴らしいバンドだし良い友達だ。

ゲインズビルを出発してアトランタで乗り換え、東京に着いてすぐ大阪へ飛んだ。ホテルに着いた頃にはすでに移動時間が３０時間たっていて、寝不足とコーヒーと赤ワインの飲みすぎから頭がくらくらしていた。

次の日、神戸の会場に着いたときMXPXとZEBRAHEADのメンバーでの最後の曲で出迎えられた、長い間ZEBRAHEADを見てなかったから、一瞬ホントにZEBRAHEADかと錯覚してしまったよ。それからNOFXの見慣れた連中がいて、突然そこが楽で慣れ親しんだ場所に変わった。神戸の会場はポストモダンな外見で、中も素晴らしく、ステージの照明がキラキラしていてワイルドだった。ライブではオーディエンスからたくさんのエネルギーを感じて盛り上がれたおかげで時差ボケもふっとばせた。その夜、ロジャーは、双子が生まれてくるため来日できなかったNOFXのエリック・メルビンの代わりにギターを弾く事を名乗り出た。ロジャーはNOFXの凄いファンだから彼らの全ての曲を知っていてギターをかき鳴らした、どれだけその時を楽しく過ごしていたかは、ロジャーのあの笑顔を見れば一目でわかったよ。

その夜は長居せずに東京行きの新幹線に乗った。食べ物は無しで、レインボー柄の缶コーヒーのBossとめちゃくちゃ明るい車内の新幹線に乗って東京へ向かった。
東京に着いた頃には移動と時差のせいで頭がグルグルまわって疲れきっていた。

Punkspring東京！
東京のライブも爆発的でエネルギッシュだった。オーディエンスはのりっぱなしで、彼らのリアクションが俺たちを更に速く、そして深くプレイする事へと煽ってくれた。印象に残るオーディエンスのおかげで、このライブが思い出深いものになった。SNUFFのライブも見に行った、今まで見た中で一番良いライブだったのがその日の目玉になったし、新しいラインナップになって初めて見たBad Religionもすごかった！

月曜日は睡眠と素晴らしい食事をとるための休日だったけど、俺は日本のレコードレーベルParking Lot Soundsのアキラと会って、あの伝説のメディコム・トイへLess Than Jakeのプロジェクトの一環で打ち合わせに行った。そのオフィスを訪れる事ができた上に、超レアなKAWSシリーズも見ることが出来て、めちゃくちゃ興奮したよ。その後、渋谷と原宿をぶらぶらしていたら小さいけどとても良いコーヒー屋を見つけた。夕飯にJRと会ってミートマンっていう六本木にあるすごい店にいった。やばい！！めちゃめちゃ美味しいし、店のバイブスもすごく良かった！メンバーの何人かはSNUFFのライブに行って、俺は俺がやっているレーベル「Paper + Plastick」の仕事をして眠りについた。

火曜日は兄弟仲のKEMURIとのライブ。素晴らしいバンドで友人でもある。そして俺たちはふみおがずっと素晴らしいフロントマンで居続けてくれていることに敬意を払う。この日のライブはもっとリラックスした感じで、友達の中でプレイしているような気分だった。古い曲と新しい曲をフルセットでプレイできるのはいいね。波のようなライブのノリや、冗談を言ったり、酒を飲んだり、良い夜だった。その夜はまたミートマンにバンド全員で行って、遅い夕飯とサワーを楽しませてもらったよ。

普段の生活に戻ることもまた自然なことのような気がする。家にもどるための飛行機にのって、何も変わらない。娘のためのおもちゃのお土産と日本のウィスキーをバッグにつめて、最後にレインボー柄の缶コーヒーのボスを飲んで。
さあ家に帰ろう。

​Back in Gainesville from the Japanese shows and starting to feel normalized from traveling the 26 hours​ half way around the world to get back here but still riding a high from the shows. The insane time traveling is a minor inconvenience compared to having the privilege of being invited to play shows in Japan and also play the last shows of the famed PUNKSPRING.

​Let me break this down in the easiest way possible, having shows is great but being able to play shows with some of my favorite bands and favorite people is entirely on the next level. NOFX, BAD RELIGION, MXPX, SNUFF, and ZEBRAHEAD all great bands, all filled with good friends.

We fly from Gainesville to Atlanta to Tokyo then to Osaka. By the time we get to the hotel its been 30 hours of travel and I’m seeing stars from no sleep and maybe too much coffee and too much red wine.

When we get to Kobe the following day, we are greeted by the last song of MXPX and our friends in ZEBRAHEAD. It feels like we just saw ZH but its been a hot minute. We start to see familiar faces from the NOFX TEAM and all of a sudden the day feels comfortable and familiar. The Kobe venue is amazing on the inside, very post modern looking and with the stage lights blinking around, it look wild. The show was a blast, lots of energy from the crowd and the feeling of being jet lagged gets sweated away. That night Roger steps in again to play guitar for Eric melvin of NOFX while he is home awaiting the birth of his twins.. Roger rips on the guitar and as a huge NOFX fan he seamlessly knows the songs and you can tell from the smile on his face that he is stoked.

We cut the night short and head to the train station to get to Tokyo that night. No food, a can of Rainbow Boss coffee, and some very bright lights on the train for the few hour ride into Tokyo.

By the time I hit Tokyo I am wiped out and the travel and time change has my head swirling.

The Show in Tokyo was loud and energetic. The crowd was non stop. The crowd reaction jolts you to push faster and dig in deeper. It makes for memorable shows because of the memorable crowds. Seeing SNUFF play and being the best I have ever seen them was a highlight, seeing Bad religion for the first time with the new line up was phenomenal.

Monday was a day off to catch ip on sleep and eat some great food but I met up with Akira from Parking Lot Sounds and we had a meeting with legendary toy maker MEDICOM for a LTJ project. It was very exciting to see there workspace and see some of those ultra rare KAWS pieces too. After the meeting I wondered the streets of Shibuya and Harajuku field by some great small craft coffee places along the way. I met up with JR for dinner at an excellent place in Ropungi called MEAT MAN. WOW! Great food and great vibe! A few of the other guys went SNUFF’s club show, I deeded to catch up on some Paper + Plastick work and sleep.

Tuesday was a club show with our brothers in KEMURI. Great band, great friends, and with great respect we have for Fumio to continually be an amazing front man. This show was more relaxed and felt like we were amongst friends. It was good to roll through a full set of old and new songs. Tonight felt right, pushing and pulling along the way through the set, telling jokes, having drinks. We wrapped the night by having a band dinner back at MEAT MAN for late night food and shoju sours.

It always seems like right when you feel normal again its time to get back on a plan home and this time was no different. I finish packing up toys for my daughter and Japanese whiskey in my bag then have my final can of Rainbow Boss coffee and its time to head home.
